Skiing around Barcelona!

Skiing close to Barcelona

Barcelona; the city of the Sagrada Familia, La Rambla and the hot summer nights at the beach. The last time there felt snow in Barcelona was in January 2004 and there was snow for half an hour.  The wintersport-holidays seem to be far away from this beautiful city. But this is not true, there are many excellent ski resorts close to Barcelona in the Pyrenees. Most of them are well to reach by car, and without car you can reach them by train or bus. Don’t expect the same “winterworld” as you might know from Austria or France. The Pyrinees do not quite match up to the Alps, especially in terms of après-ski-life, but for a 1,2 or 3 day trip there are many great places for excellent skiing. The ski resorts close to Barcelona are:

Ski resorts: Granvalira, Andorra

There are 6 possibilities of access to the resort. They are all along the Carretera General 2, known as the road the France. If you go by train, the nearest trainstation is:La Rabasseas.

Granvalira is the biggest and most legendary resort in Andorra. Complete with spectacular landscapes and amazing panoramic views. It is a bit further away, but you get 193 kilometer of ski slopes of all levels and plenty of boarding runs. If you want to visit this resort it is worth staying for the whole weekend. The prices are €35,00 for one day access to the whole resort in the high season and €33,50 in the low season. For the beginners there is a different pass available, for €20,00 a day you can use only the Canillo section of the resort.

Ski resort: Vall de Nuria

This resort is a bit closer the Barcelona, it is ideal for a one day trip. You can easily go by train from the Barcelona Sants station to Ribes the Freser and then rack rail to Vall the Nuria.

Vall the Nuria is also a lot smaller compared to Granvalira, but there a still plenty of facilities and services. There are 11 ski slopes and 4 lifts, ski school, equipment hire, snow parks and medical services. If there are people who don’t want to ski or snowboard, there is the possibility to enjoy the snow with activities like cross country skiing, sledging and snowshoe outings. The prices for a skipass with access for 1 day are: €26,60 in the low season and €29,50 in the highseason. A group ski or snowboard lesson costs €16,00 for 2 hours.

Ski resort: La Molina

This is probably the closest ski resort to Barcelona. You can, for example, go by train from the Barcelona Sants station to La Molina and then the connecting bus to the La Molina slopes. It is realy accessible by car bus and train.

La Molina is located in a well-situated location, surrounded by mountains of more then 2500 meters. It is the oldest ski resort in Spain, and because the mountains are so high the snow conditions should be pretty good. The ski resort is divided in four ski areas. La Molina has the experience to maintain its position as one of the premier ski resorts of Spain offering the newest technology and services. In total there are 42 ski slopes and 16 lifts. There is a self-timing kilometre speed run and a snowboard park with a 100m snowpipe for those who like the challenge! Recent expansions were engineered to respect the environment and the needs of the customers. Herefore La Molina has received the ISO 14001 awards for Natural Environment and the Q for tourism Quality. Prices for a one day skipass are: €32,25 in the lowseason and €35,80 in the highseason.

La Boqueria

La Boqueria,

La Boqueria is the famous Market in the middle of La rambla in Barcelona. Probably one of the most known Markets in Europe. The market is really old and looks very nice, this is a place where everyone must have been. This is the example of a typically Spanish market where you can find stands where they sell typically Spanish products, such as different kinds of fish, jamon and olives.

The market consist of a covering which shapes a kind of hall where a lot of stands are settled. In every area in every Spanish city you can find such market, but this one is beautiful and has a impressive entrance. Despite it is located on the most touristic street of Barcelona, there are no souvenirs shops on the market.

The market has got a lot of history, it was born as a travelling market. In catalunya, towns and cities have been founded around markets, open air markets where salesmen, fruit and vegetable vendors from others towns settled to sale their products. The first stone of the market la Boqueria was placed on St. Joseph’s day in 1840. The market acquired to official character when 14 florists paud their tables, and they were uniformed. Some fruits and vegetables salesmen where allowed to settle professionally at Plaza Sant Agusti and it was then when la Rabla remained exclusively for flower stands. The sale of flowers increased. The retail places of fruits and vegetables, settled underneath the porches. In 1911 the actual fishmonger shop was built. In 1914 the market with the metal deck was inaugurated. As from there it began to modernize and to improve. Also at the sanitary level, which was very important.

Today, la Boqueria has become the most emblematic market of all the network. The situation, the salesmen, all the tourists who visit the city. This market has for the locals in Barcelona a lot of history impact. It is entwined with the city history, their popular traditions and celebrations. The commercial supply is vary: fish, seafood, tinned food, butchery, offal, birds, hunt, eggs, fruits, vegetables, herbs, delicatessen, bread ect.ect. You can get what ever you want. It is really worth visiting if you are coming to Barcelona.

Parc Ciutadella

Parc Ciutadella is the biggest park in Barcelona. It is a very popular park especially between the inhabitants of Barcelona. The park is build in 1888 and has a romantic garden in a English style surrounded by two with trees bordered boulevards, a monumental waterfall and a pond. It is a oasis of peace in the centre of the busy city, with a lot of green, paths and playgrounds for kids.

The park has got a long and interesting history. Original there was a fortress designed in the shape of a star. Build in 1715 by Prosper Verboom for the king by then, king Felipe V. The citadel was build to be used by his army in the war against the Bourbon kings.  After a siege of 18 months fell the fortress and it became a prison in the time of Napoleon.

In 1888 was the park used for the world exhibition. In that period are more buildings constructed in the park. The fountains were designed before by Antoni Gaudi and others. The gardens around the fountains are designed by the French architect Jean Forestier. The park has a surface of 30 hectare. Before the intrance of the park you‘ll find the Arc del Triomf. In the park there is a quiet pond, but also a cascade fountain with winged horses and snail tails. The head entrance is designed by Josep Vilaseca I Casanovas.

Sagrada Familia

The Sagrada Familia,

The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Famila is a church in the wonderfull city Barcelona. It is a curious building in the so-called neocatalan style and catalan modernisme with whimsically shaped towers and ornaments. They’ve been working on this for so lang that the finished parts are stricken and have to be renovated. A lot of people think that the Sagrada Familia will never be finished.

The designer of the Sagrada Familia was the architect Antoni Gaudì. The inventor of more charateristic buildings in Barcelona. For example the Casa Batllò and Parc Güell. This was the last work of Gaudi, he gave all the last years of his life only for this and lived during those years like a anchoret on the construction site. When he got under a tram by accident he died and buried in the crypt of the church.

The original plan was to build a neogotisch church but after a year Antoni Gaudi got the job and he changed all the plans. The began to build a church in his own excentric style. The building is full of christical symbolic. There is , for example, a centric tower with a big coccyx which have to refer to Christus. And the twelve apostels have all their own bell tower. Every façade wants to show a moment in the life of Christus. The idea came from a bookseller called Joseph Marìa Bocabella. He wanted to protect the St. Joseph from the dechristianisation of that time. He found a piece of ground of 12.800 square meters in a block that was clear-cutted by the streets Marina, Provenca, Malloca and Cerdena.

Francisco de Paule del Villar offered to make a plan for the idea for free. His design was totally neogotic. Del Villar didn’t finish the crypt but Gaudi kept it like the original drawings. The design had the basic of a headship and a tripartite transept, so that the total ground plan would form a latin croup. The temple was supposed to get three facades with each four towers which should symbolise the twelve apostles. On top of the towers are the words: Hosanna, Excelsis and Sanctus written. A central headtower surrounded by four towers had to present Christus and the evangelisten. For the rest there were three chapels, one baptistery, one for penitents and a atrium. Also the interior was considerate with his ideas. The choir was taken up with seven chapels grouped around the central chapel. This one is consecrated to the Ascension day of Maria and on the opposite side of the headship are on both sides of the head portal a confess- and a baptistery chapel build.

The ship was supposed to be a jungle of pillars, because Gaudì wanted to take care of the burden of the construction without exterior flying buttresses, in contrast with other designers of gotic churches. He wanted to use his own technique. The exterior is ‘dressed’ with a grandly illustration of the delivery of the humanity by Jesus. To examine and design everything as good as possible and from every corner made Gaudi a lot of models of the temple.

Every pillar has got his own theme. For example the westfacade has the theme: the suffer of Christus and the eastfacade the birth of Christus. If the building ever get finished it will be the biggest in the world. The tops of the towers are inspired by cubism and the decorations are probably inspired by the Art Nouveau. Originally the towers have to be three times as high as they are right now. At the birth part is a lot of decoration and three gates called: Fe, Esperanca and Caritat. ( Believe, hope and love) who are the entrance to the wing of the Epistle of the calvary.

The Sagrada Familia is a roman-catholic basilica and the masterpiece of Gaudi. In this temple, which is meanwhile the symbol of the modernisch architecture in Barcelona, summarized Gaudi all his views about architecture. On the 3th of November in 1883 he took the lead of construction over from Francisco de Paula del Villar, who was a follower of the neogotic. Gaudi teached all the artisans and kept an eye on every detail. He kept changing his ideas until the style was not to be named gotic anymore.

The construction of the consolation church was in the past only payed by donations. That is one of the reasons why it took so long to build, but from the eighties the constriction was speeded up by asking for entree fees. Antoni Gaudi knew that he couldn’t see the Sagrada Familia finishing so he prepared all the models and drawings for the architects after him to make it easier, After Gaudi the following architectures are involved: Francesco Quintana, Puig Boada and Lluìs Gari, the sculptures are made by J. Busquets and the facades by Joseph Subirachs, Now in 2007 is the construction of the church still not finished. They expect that the building will be finished in 2025.  A festive inauguration can take place on the 100th day of death of Gaudi on the 10th of June in 2026.

El Raval, “Este és otro mundo”

This district is not really a touristy attraction, but it is a student- and multicultural neighbourhood where in the sphere of modern architecture are some things to see.

For visitors going to the city Barcelona, Plaza Catalunya and Las Ramblas constitute the origin of the city. Millions of people walk every day along those two icons of the centre of Barcelona. The neighbourhood is between Paral.lel, la ronda de Sant Pau, la calle Pelayo and Las ramblas. It covers the west area of Las Ramblas.

El raval was historically the red-light zone and a slum of Old Barcelona. The area is quickly becoming the city’s new ‘in’ area. A lot of bars and clubs are frequently visited by young artists and bohemian types. They now fill formerly sketchy alleyways. El Raval is the alternative scene. The old reputation had been dispersed, thanks to its new and diverse developments especially on the cultural sight.

The representative of the Fundaciòn Tot Raval said: ’it is a completely different world’.  It is a mix of cultures is this neighbourhood. If you walk in the small busy streets you will find small Chinese shops where you can find everything you think off. There are bars and restaurants with food from all over the world. There live a lot of Moroccans, Filipinos, Indonesians, and people from the Dominican republic. It is a miscellany of cultures and nationalities living in this area. They all contribute in the neighbourhood with their own specialties. There are a lot of people looking for a job, they don’t get any help. Especially in the district Ciutat Vella and El Raval. The highest number of arrests are in El Raval and that’s why the Mossos d’Equadra have a big office in this neighbourhood. El Raval got safer every year, but you still have to watch your wallet if you walk around. There are 380 kids who are going to school in the neighbourhood El Raval and 80% of them are immigrants. They prefer working before education and they are really hard to motivate says a teacher of a school in El Raval. And offcourse it is hard to teach children with 23 nationalities using Catalan to communicate.

On the cultural sight there is a Centre de Cultura Contemporani on the Montalegre 5. Only the inner court is already impressive enough to visit, it is very accessible. If you go in on the back site you will see two beautiful modern buildings. One is the museum of contemporary arts called: MACBA. Close to the MACBA on placa salvador segui is a huge wall-painting of Keith Harring. Influenced by this and Catalunya’s beautiful National library, found here, the raval barrio flaunts bookstores including trendy art book ‘galleries’, cafes and bars. There are busy little streets are full of in-the-know music and record stores and it is also a favourite for vintage-style shopping. Besides the MACBA gallery there is Palau Güell. The multicultural neighbourhood and great setting off las ramblas makes El Raval perfect for everyone who wants a mix of excitement and art.
